    Team building incorporates dimensions of positive youth development such as competence, caring, connection, and belonging within a group. It results in a team, which is usually described as a group of people linked in a common purpose. Team building is both a process of and an outcome from camp experiences.

    Developing Peer Relationships is a key element of youth development. Social skills involve a variety of process of caring and supportive relationships with adults as well as peers, communication, cooperation, and teamwork skills. Peer relationships, however, focus primarily on means for making and keeping friends along with having a sense of belonging.

    One theory that has been well-tested in a variety of contexts and with a variety of populations is Self- Determination Theory . “To be self-determined is to endorse one’s actions at the highest level of reflection. When self-determined, people experience a sense of freedom to do what is interesting, personally important, and vitalizing”.
